Short Introduction
Online casinos have not been around that long. In fact, the first online casino is probably not more than 15 years old. That is a conservative estimate, designed to make absolutely sure that the range encompasses the event, but many historians believe that the first online casino might not even be 10 years old until the end of the year. While the actual date of beginning is not really known, online casino history can be divided into different periods of overlapping endpoints in time. These periods correspond not to time necessarily, but rather to the evolution the online casino has gone through from its origins to the present day.
Origins, 1993-1998
The most likely five year range encompassing the first real online casino is the one listed in the title of the subheading. Most historians would actually narrow that range down to 1995-1998. However, the first online casino was nothing like an online casino is today. The graphics were extremely choppy, game play was practically nonexistent and of course there were problems with the random number generators being used at that point. Based on examination of the first online casino software packages, nobody could ever have guessed how popular online casino gaming would become.
Refit, 1998-2003
The first refit of the online casino occurred soon after it was introduced and at that point a number of different advances were made, most notably in the graphics department. While functionality with online casino software packages was still a problem after the turn of the century, many of the graphical user interfaces still used today came into being during this time. Even if the online casino did not operate well, it at least looked good in doing it.
Explosion, 2003-Present
In 2003, online poker boomed because of events that took place at the World Series of Poker tournament that happened that year. With new demand now driving the online casino industry, massive amounts of capital were put towards the development of newer and better software systems and eventually the modern casino functionality package was developed. Every modern online casino now has excellent functionality thanks to the code that was developed during that period and new research being conducted everyday is leading to newer and better online casino packages than anyone could have dreamed possible back during the period of its origin.
Future Possibilities
The only thing that is certain about the future of the online casino is that it will continue to grow. More people will begin to use online casinos and more research will be put into making them better. Three dimensional graphical user interfaces can not be that far behind and with Multitouch technology on the way in Windows 7, the online casino could be on the verge of becoming far more realistic in nature.
